Last gasp Hugo header wins it for Latics
WIGAN ATHLETIC 1
Rodallega 90+3
BURNLEY 0
Report by Paul Chialton
Hugo Rodallega was the hero of the afternoon at the DW Stadium heading home with minutes left on the clock to bring a thrilling end to a highly-charged afternoon at the DW Stadium.
Just when it seemed as though Latics' luck was out after being denied a first-half penalty, seeing Brian Jensen pull off two fantastic saves, up popped the Colombian star to dive onto a Victor Moses cross and win three golden points for Roberto Martinez's men.
Moments earlier Chris Kirkland produced a fantastic save from David Nugent, the striker clean-through and attempting to slip under the 'keeper who had other ideas.
A great moment for Kirky who earlier in the game had been struck by an object thrown from the Burnley fans. A moment that soured the atmosphere and raised the levels of intensity that were already at bubbling point.
With so much at stake it was always going to be a tense afternoon, but credit must go to both sides who were determined to play good football and find a route through the defence.
Gary Caldwell had come closet, heading a James McCarthy corner against the post, minutes after throwing himself in-front of Wade Elliott's goal-bound effort.
Going into the final half-hour the game began to open up more with three points meaning so much to either side.
But it was Latics who produced the killer-blow thanks to a moment of real magic from Rodallega and a calm, calculated cross from Moses. A moment that lifted the roof and the most significant goal of our season so far.
