Report by Paul Chialton
Scott Sinclair's late goal and five minutes of extra time was not enough to salvage a result from the KC Stadium as a resurgent Hull City team ran out 2-1 winners.
After a first-half in which neither side could really control the game, it was Dutchman Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink who broke the dead-lock, grabbing his first goal for the club and putting his side into the lead.
The man with the biggest name in football made an excellent run to the front post and Nick Barmby's corner, heading into the ground and past Chris Kirkland.
That was the injection the game needed as both sides started to raise their game, Hull growing in confidence, the deciding factor of the day, and Latics doing well to quell the pressure at the back.
However, it was an errant ball from the Latics defence that found Kamil Zayatte on the half-way line. The Guinean charged forward with the ball to the by-line chipped over to the back-post for Geovanni to volley home what turned out to be the winning-goal.
With a real job on their hands Latics pushed to claim something from the encounter and it was Scott Sinclair who breathed life into his side.
The winger looked dangerous whenever he was on the ball and had the belief and resilience to try and get his side back in the game.
He did excellently for his goal, getting into the right area to pounce on Boaz Myhil's save from Jordi Gomez's shot, and head home.
Alas it was not enough as Latics were unable to build on the heights of last week and they must now re-group and prepare for the upcoming home game against Man City on Sunday October 18
