Last minute Baines penalty in the rain sinks Latics

EVERTON 1
Saha 63
Baines 90+3
WIGAN ATHLETIC 1
Scharner 57

Report by Paul Chialton

Former Latics Leighton Baines was the man who broke Wigan Athletic's hearts, converted a penalty deep deep into injury time.

Jo managed to get the wrong side of Emmerson Boyce down the right side and when the defender made his challenge it left referee Lee Probert with no other decision then to award the spot-kick, which Baines drove down the centre.

David Moyes' men had to come from behind when Paul Scharner put Latics up just before the hour-mark, stooping low to meet a Charles N'Zogbia cross at the back post and head past Tim Howard.

It was the Austrian's first goal since Ipswich Town in the Carling Cup last September, and it really gave his side a kick-start.

The celebrations didn't last long however, when Louis Saha rose to meet a Leighton Baines corner and head past the otherwise impressive Mike Pollitt.

Not letting their heads go down, Roberto Martinez's men kept going and caused the Everton defence a number of problems.

Jordi Gomez came into the game more, getting hold of the ball and moving it round nicely to keep possession.

He so nearly bagged his first goal for the club, meeting Mario Melchiot's low cross but only able to direct it against the post. His free-kick effort moments later was saved well down low by Howard as the Latics turned their attention to defending.

Scott Sinclair came on with ten minutes left and almost caught the Toffees on the break, jinking past Joseph Yobo but hitting his shot against Howard.

All was set for a well earned point, when Boyce made his only error of the game in bringing down Jo. Pollitt, who had been excellent throughout standing in for Chris Kirkland had no chance from the penalty, and the Goodison faithful were left singing in the rain.
