Fine display earns a great result at Villa Park

An excellent result well earned by Latics, thwarting the in-form Aston Villa at Villa Park.
Steve Bruce's decision to field three centre-halves proved to be a masterstroke as Gabriel Agbonlahor and former Latic Emile Heskey failed to break down the Wigan back-line.
Excellent displays from Emmerson Boyce and Mario Melchiot gave Agbonlahor little room to manoeuvre down the wings, and the solid Titus Bramble relished playing against former team-mate Heskey, winning the majority of their clashes.
Paul Scharner was Wigan's star-man after two goal-line clearances from Villa's in-direct free-kick in the area when Michael Brown was adjudged to have played a back-pass to Chris Kirkland.
The Austrian stretched twice superbly to deny the efforts of John Carew and then Luke Young keeping the score-line level.
Maynor Figueroa will also receive a few pats on the back after throwing himself in front of one of Agbonlahor's efforts and deflect the ball over for a corner when a goal seemed certain.
To assume Wigan's strategy was defensive would be unfair and they could have gone in at half-time in the lead. Daniel de Ridder had a golden chance on the half-hour mark, latching onto Melchiot's through ball but striking straight at the keeper.
Figueroa also had an excellent effort denied by Brad Friedel. The Honduran met Michael Brown's pinpoint cross to head at goal, only for the keeper to produce a great save and tip over the bar.
The half-time introduction of Hugo Rodallega added purpose to Wigan's attack, and the Colombian's pace and control caused problems for the home-side throughout the second-half, whilst Ben Watson gave an assured performance coming on to make his Wigan debut 15 minutes before the end.
Overall it was a fine display by Bruce's men soaking up plenty of pressure and keeping the ball well when in possession. The game brings an end to an extremely tough month in which Wigan have earned some brilliant results against some difficult opposition.
