Report by Paul Chialton

Latics were dealt a cruel blow at Anfield as Dirk Kuyt's late goal won the three points Steve Bruce's men so deserved.

Latics were the better side throughout much of this game with Amr Zaki terrorising Liverpool's defenceand scoring two excellent goals.

His strength, pace and hard-work typified Latics performance, not letting their opponents settle on the ball and forcing them into mistakes for the majority of the game.

It was one of these mistakes that led to Zaki's opener, pouncing on Daniel Agger's mistake at the back to slot home past Pepe Reina.

Latics continued to dominate proceedings and although Kuyt equalised for the home team shortly after, Liverpool still struggled to break through Latics' defence.

Their persistence was rewarded on the stroke of half-time when Antonio Valencia beat two defenders and crossed to the far post for Zaki to execute a perfect bicycle kick into the right-hand corner and send Wigan into half-time with a deserved lead. It's arguably Zaki's finest strike for the club and fans will get plenty of chances to view this one again and again.

The game was, however to have a sting in its tail and Albert Riera's strike on 80min sparked Liverpool's comeback. This coupled with Valencia's sending off for a second bookable offence made Latics task of riding the storm even harder.

Liverpool's comeback was complete 5min before the end when Kuyt's shot was palmed by Chris Kirkland onto the bar and the post before bouncing in the goal.

Although it will be the home side who claim the headlines tomorrow morning Latics performance was magnificent, and this will go down as one of the most undeserved results of the season.
