Heskey 2 v Spurs

An incredible match at the JJB Stadium saw an adventurous Latics take the lead three times, but on all occasions, the visitors from North London equalised within minutes of each goal.

Latics scored after just 50 seconds and it all came from a foul conceded by former defender Pascal Chimbonda. The Frenchman, who was continuously booed by the home crowd, pulled on Emile Heskey's shirt. Leighton Baines' free kick was directed into the area, and a huge scramble eventually saw Heskey bundle the ball over the line with his head for his 9th goal of the campaign.

But Dimitar Berbatov levelled the scores within minutes when he seemingly weaved his way through the penalty area and rode an Emmerson Boyce challenge before despatching the ball past John Filan at the near post.

Latics regained the lead on the half hour mark with a goal that came out of nowhere. Leighton Baines, stood outside of the penalty area, simply produced a stunning volley which flew over Paul Robinson's head and into the top corner of the net!

However, Spurs were soon level again, this time from the penalty spot. The visitors went on the counter attack and Leighton Baines pushed Jermaine Jenas as the midfielder raced into the penalty box. Referee Graham Poll immediately pointed to the spot and Robbie Keane coolly sent the ball low into the corner of the net leaving the veteran goalkeeper with no chance. However replays showed that Baines' foul was outside the penalty area.

Camara 2 v Spurs

Latics took the lead for a third time just before the hour when Kevin Kilbane netted his first goal of the season when he easily headed home from a Ryan Taylor corner. The Irishman was totally unmarked in the penalty area exposing the frailties of the Spurs defence.

But Latics failed to hold onto their lead again when Spurs pulled another goal back in the 67th minute when Keane sensationally saw Filan off his line and chipped the goalkeeper from over thirty yards.

Paul Scharner almost sneaked a late winner with just three minutes to go when he decided to unleash a shot from thirty-five yards, and the ball came crashing onto the underside of the bar and landed in the hands a of a relieved Robinson.

In what was a real thriller of a match for the neutral, Latics fans will probably be annoyed at seeing their team lose the lead on several times. But Latics did play adventurously and certainly had the North London team on the back foot for spells.

Jewell's men were denied another goal at the end of the first half when Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson was forced into a world class save when substitute Ryan Taylor's fantastically accurate cross found the head of Paul Scharner, whose bullet header looked destined for the back of the net.

Baines 2 v Spurs

Spurs looked really dangerous going forward, but Latics actually produced more chances throughout the match. In the early exchanges of the second half.

Emmerson Boyce laid the ball off to Denny Landzaat, whose powerful low shot was only just saved by the outstretched Robinson.

Then five minutes later, Henri Camara squared ball back to Scharner, who powered to the edge of the box and fired agonisingly close, the ball just scraping the bar.

At the other end of the pitch, Landzaat saved Wigan's skin during the first half when he cleared Keane's shot away from the six yard box and just after an hours play, Filan had to palm away Jermaine Jenas' free kick as it looked to be sneaking into the top corner of the net.
