Match report by Paul Chialton

An historic night for Wigan Athletic as Hugo Rodallega's first-half strike sealed the club's first ever victory over Liverpool.

In a first-half were neither side were able to control the game or test the 'keeper, it was Latics who came out on top, capitalising on Liverpool's sloppy play at the back and showing the kind of killer-instinct in the final third that had been missing of late.

Hugo Rodallega
HOT ROD: Hugo steers home the game's only goal

Charles N'Zogbia seized upon Dirk Kuyt's wayward ball and played in Emmerson Boyce, whose perfectly weighted cross found Hugo Rodallega to nudge home.

The Colombian did well to get round Javier Mascherano and finish, a goal that burst the DW Stadium into life and exemplified the quality and threat Latics have.

Teamed with Marcelo Moreno up-top the two are forming a very good understanding of one another and looking more a threat with every game together.

The Bolivian almost doubled the scoreline on the hour-mark getting a fortunate deflection off Jamie Carragher's clearance that Sotirios Kygriakos had to scramble to clear off the line.

And as the game developed so did Roberto Martinez's men, slowly but surely frustrating Liverpool, offering little or not outlet for the frustrated Fernando Torres and making sure the opposition were not allowed to gather any kind of momentum.

It was such a clever display from the boys realising the one-dimensional, fruitless and it has to be said toothless, attacking presence the visitors presented, and quite happy to let them squander their own chances, capitalising on their ineptness.

James McCarthy
SUPER MAC: McCarthy showed his class

James McCarthy and Mohamed Diame were superb, covering every blade of the newly-laid grass and moving the ball with confidence bordering on swagger.

By the time the final whistle came it was a welcome sound for both the home and away fans, such was the dominating and strong manner that Latics performed; bossing Liverpool out of the game, rising to the occasion and earning three golden points.

A night to savour and remember for everyone associated with Latics and a real boost entering the final third of the season.
