A disappointing night for Latics' reserves whose recent run of good form was brought to an abrupt halt by Everton at Robin Park.
The game was effectively over by half-time, with the visitors 3-0 up thanks to a Shane Duffy brace, and the first of Thomas Donegan's double.
However, second-half goals from Tomasz Cywka from the penalty spot, following a foul inside the area, and Jon Routledge managed to shine some light on the evening's proceedings. Routledge's calm finish will have impressed both Graham Barrow and Dave Watson, as well as the on-looking Roberto Martinez, his right footed shot from the edge of the area leaving former Latics Carlo Nash with no chance.
Overall, Latics struggled to get their game going, unable to find the kind of rhythm and flow that has served them so well of late.
But in fairness they were up against an Everton side who worked hard to create their opportunities and took them when they came along.
So it's a painful lesson for Barrow's team, who have recently started to see the rewards for trying to implement the same brand of football seen in the first-team.
But with each game they are growing, becoming accustomed to the new tactics and gaining valuable experience to help them make the step to the next level, something Martinez is keen on seeing.
Next week's home game against Liverpool will pose a tougher test and, together with Dave Watson, Barrow will have his side ready to put tonight's game behind them.
