Two good goals from Callum McManaman and Jon Routledge gave Keith Bertschin's young Latics a thoroughly deserved first win in eight games, to the delight of their manager.

Facing the side who defeated them last week, plus veteran Dean Windass, Latics were positive throughout and although they were up against a more experienced side - Mike Pollitt aside - they never stopped battling and got their just rewards in the end.

Pollitt provided calmness from the back when required. He made one excellent save in the first half and had to deal with a few late scrambles as the visitors pushed for an equaliser. But in truth he did not have the busiest of evenings.

Bertschin said: "I was really pleased for them. It wasn't a perfect performance by any means, and we still make silly mistakes at times, but we created several great chances, took two of them and defended well enough to get the win. Good for them."

The lively McManaman took his goal really well, just before the break.

Left back Daniel Redmond won the ball in midfield, Joe Holt passed it onto McManaman down the left channel, who twisted away from two markers before firing in from a tight angle under intense pressure. A striker's finish.

Latics could have been out of sight by the time McManaman struck.

Jonathan Breeze failed to connect in front of goal from a good Tomasz Kupisz cross, Kupisz himself saw a shot really well saved by Tom Woodhead in the Hull goal while Matty Hampson went round the keeper but couldn't squeeze the ball in at the far post.

Dean Windass briefly levelled matters after the break when he was given too much time in the box and he volleyed powerfully past Pollitt frm ten yards.

Hull's best other chance came when Pollitt was beaten by a ferocious drive from Nicky Featherstone that Daniel Redmond bravely headed off the line; leaving the young defender looking a little worse for ware for a few seconds.

McManaman then turned provider for the second, spinning quickly in midfield to send Routledge through on goal and his neat finish from the edge of the box nestled into the far corner of Woodhead's goal.

Hampson had two more chances to make it more comfortable, both went just wide, before Hull put some pressure on Latics in a tense finish.
