Erik Edman starts fourth reserve game as Keith Bertschin's boys lose out to Bolton
WIGAN ATHLETIC 0
BOLTON WANDERERS 2
Keith Bertschin's Reserve team lost their 100% home record as they went down to neighbours Bolton Wanderers in atrocious conditions at Robin Park tonight.
The chief positive for Latics was another 90 minutes for Erik Edman, his 4th appearance for the reserves on his way back from his cruciate knee injury nightmare, which will delight Steve Bruce.
"We don't want to rush him back," says Bruce, "but when he is finally able to join up with the squad it will feel like a new signing and will add terrific competition for places."
Edman looked solid on a night when flowing football was never going to be on the agenda. The pitch cut up badly and prevented either side really getting any rhythm to their play.
Latics' best efforts came from an early Edman shot and a terrific effort from Andrew Pearson in the second half.
Keith Bertschin was disappointed but he said the team did not play to their potential tonight.
"Bolton took their chances tonight, we didn't," he said, "that was the difference. The boys have set themselves such a high standard this season and I think we probably, as a team, fell just short of that this evening.
"They didn't lack anything for endeavour but I was a bit disappointed in terms of quality, which is not something I've been able to say very often this season."
Both Wanderers' goals were scored by Slovakian Under 21 international Zoltan Harsanyi, one in each half.
