Erik Edman played over an hour as Keith Bertschin's Latics came from behind to make it a second Wigan Athletic win over Everton in less than 24 hours at Robin Park tonight.

This was a fully deserved third consecutive home victory for Latics, with Wigan born Matty Hampson's stunning 25 yard free-kick with five minutes left igniting wild celebrations from the players.

Republic of Ireland Under 19 striker Craig Mahon had earlier drawn Latics level just before the break with a neatly volleyed finish after Everton, managed by former Latics centre half Andy Holden, had gone ahead from the penalty spot throuogh Dan Gosling.

Both sides hit the bar in a good game that could have swung either way, especially in an exciting second half, but Latics showed the greater tenacity.

Poland Under 21 international Tomasz Cywka was a constant thorn in Everton's side, striking a post early and twice being denied by excellent saves after the break.

Mahon was also very lively at times and saw a sharp volley saved after good work from Tomasz Kupisz on the left side, while Jon Routledge was also unlucky to see his second half drive well saved.

Erik Edman played over an hour in his bid to make it a good end to a bad year, and the game looked as if it would peter out to a draw until Hampson brilliantly found the top right hand corner of the net.

Bertschin said he was delighted once again with the application of the side. "They are playing for each other, that's what's so pleasing for me as a coach," he said, "they never let their heads drop tonight and showed real spirit to come from behind again.

"I'm pleased for all of them because they really battled hard tonight and earned what they got through sheer guts and determination."
