Despite a brave fight-back in the second half, Mark Seagraves' men left themselves with two much to do at Kingston Park after conceding three first half goals to a Newcastle team featuring £5.3 million pound signing Joey Barton.
After goals from Barton, Frank Danquah and a deflected strike from Frank Pattison, Latics were a transformed team after the break. Fresh from two goals in the Youth team's 2-1 win over Chester on Saturday, Wigan born winger Matty Hampson was outstanding in attack, alongside scorer Chris McCaughtrie, who netted by converting a Tomasz Cywka pass with a cool finish.

Both McCaughtrie and Hampson were also were thwarted in one-on-one situations, while McCaughtrie also struck the bar with an excellent header when the score was still 1-0 in the first half.
The second half saw a much more assured performance from Latics defensively as well. Andrew Pearson was in commanding form at center half, with Luke Ashworth continuing to impress. Full backs Peter Moore and Kris King also earned plaudits for helping Wigan keep a clean sheet after the break and restrict Newcastle.

Matty Hampson - impressive
Other performances of note came from Rachid Bouaouzan, who looked very busy on the left wing, Craig Mahon worked tirelessly up front, Lewis Montrose battled hard in the middle and Tomasz Cywka was at his creative best to set up the goal.
Seagraves said: "We just left ourselves with a bit too much to do in the second half, although I was pleased with the way the lads showed great desire to come back into it. Hopefully, they will be able to learn from that."
