Mark Seagraves' men swept to an emphatic first win of the season with a totally comprehensive demolition of his former club Bolton Wanderers at the Lancashire FA in Leyland.
Republic of Ireland Under 19 striker Craig Mahon grabbed his first two goals at this level with the kind of predatory finishes seen so often for the Youth team, and two long range strikes of exceptional quality from David Cotterill and Rachid Bouaouzan sealed a totally one-sided game.
Mahon seized upon a knock down from Antonio Valencia to score from eight yards just before the break, which set Latics on their way.
Coterill doubled the lead with a goal of individual brilliance early in the second half, cutting in from the left and letting fly with a superb drive.
Rachid Bouaouzan then scored his first goal in Latics colours, and it was one to remember, another great strike from outside the box from the left hand side.
With the game already won, Mahon added a neat near-post header from close range to seal a comprehensive victory.
A delighted Seagraves said afterwards: "From the first to the last whistle, there was a purpose about our play and aside from the finishing, that was excellent tonight, I thought we bossed the game in every area of the pitch. I was particularly pleased for the young boys who really gave everything tonight."
Antonio Valencia played the first half as part of his come-back, Ryan Taylor was given 70 minutes, Fitz Hall dominated the back four, ably assisted by Luke Ashworth, while Peter Moore at right back and Lewis Montrose in midfield were also impressive. Craig Mahon's was the stand-out performance on the night, however.
