Girls Health and Well Being is a funded project through Premier League Professional Football Association with support from local partners including the Young people's drug and alcohol team, NHS Smoking Sensations Team, Brook in Wigan, PSHE+C team for Nutrition and profiles gym for fitness. The Aim of the project is to help improve the health and well being of teenage girls living in disadvantaged communities. The objectives are to increase knowledge base regarding healthy lifestyles, including topic areas of smoking, drugs and alcohol, nutrition, sexual health and fitness, to assist in improving decision-making and problem-solving skills in relation to these topic areas, Increase participation in sport/physical activity and fitness levels of participants as a result of achieving the preceding objectives.

The girl's health and well being project which piloted in 2008 has now had one year of trial and error resulting in a new structured layout to help maximise girl's participation levels in P.E and exercise. The new layout of the project focuses on the interest of the girls with steering groups being held every 6/7 weeks. These groups are regular meetings where two representatives from each school come together at the DW stadium and voice there interests and ideas towards the project. We also evaluate topics that have previously been done and plan events within the project. These sessions are essential to the project as we are developing a project that is created and run by the girls themselves.

Within the schools we hold curriculum time sessions, lunchtime clubs and afterschool clubs.

Curriculum sessions are were the girls work through a structured workout that has been designed around the school curriculum. The work booklet also focuses on our 5 partnerships that help in the key support areas of Nutrition, Drugs and Alcohol, Fitness, Relationships and Smoking Cessation.

In the booklets they do a quick 10 minute tasks set by the partnerships and then go on to the practical side of the lesson.

As part of the fitness selection within the school curriculum in January to February the girls have visited the local profiles gym. The visits have entailed with all the girls receiving a full induction of the gym and they have also gained advice and guidance towards fitness. The girls have been doing these sessions in there curriculum sessions with the option also now to attend the gym afterschool or at weekends.

Each session the girls preplan workouts and with guidance from the gym are looking to improve there fitness and knowledge around training.
Within each school we have had great feedback and teachers from the schools have been telling us that some of the girls are attending the gym 3-4 times a week out of hours.

Today we have chosen St Edmund Arrowsmith who are currently attending Ashton Leisure centre every Thursday between 2.30-3.00pm for our places for players event. Places for Players highlights to fans and the general public how Barclays Premier League Clubs play an important role in their communities, requires players to 'get their hands dirty' and take an active role in promoting what their own club's community departments and Foundations do all year-round. Five Places for Players events are required throughout the season. Four appearances will relate to the community projects in this case Girls Health and Well Being. The fifth player's appearance will be to a chosen charity from the club who will receive a visit and a £20,000 donation.

In this event we will see girls working out alongside two Wigan Athletic players Antonio Amaya and Mohamed Diame who will support and guide the girls within the session.
