Jones began his career with non-league Bridlington Town before joining Doncaster Rovers for a fee of £10,000 in 1993.  He was Doncaster's leading scorer in 93/94 and 94/95 seasons and he also had the honour of becomng the first player to register a goal in the Coca Cola Cup.

In July 1996, he joined Wigan Athletic for a then record fee of £150,000 scoring on his debut in the 1-1 draw away to Barnet.  He also went onto smash the Latics' goal scoring records that season finishing the campaign with 33 league goals, still a record today.  He also added to his title medal that season the Club's player of the year award and was selected in divisional team of the year.

Jones moved to St. Johnstone for £100,000 where he helped them to achieve a fifth spot in the Scottish Premier Division.  He also had spells with Southend United, Boston United, Clyde, Bury and Hamilton Accademicals before hanging up his playing boots.

It was with the Accies he first took an assistant Manager's position before he then linked up with his former playing colleague Roberto Martinez at Swansea City where together they won promotion to the Championship.
