Wigan Athletic Community Trust have recruited two new members of staff since the turn of the year, with Fergus Heyes and Deryn Jones joining the team as Premier League 4 Sport Co-ordinator and Sports and Dance coach respectively.
Fergus brings with him a wealth of experience and joins the Trust from Blackburn Rovers, where he held a similar position for two and a half years, while Deryn has been appointed to deliver dance lessons as part of the Trust’s offer to primary schools.
Premier League 4 Sport started in September 2009 and uses the power of professional clubs to inspire young people to get involved in 12 different sports; athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, golf, handball, hockey, judo, netball, table tennis, tennis and volleyball.
The project, which consists of 22 multi-sport sessions, engages with over 1,000 young people a year, with sessions taking place six days a week for 30 weeks of the year.
Fergus said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time here so far. It’s an exciting new challenge for myself at a really good organisation, so I’m just looking forward to progressing over the next few years in a role which is ideal for me. I’m excited to be here.
He added: “Zac Taylor, who held this position before me, did a fantastic job because it’s a really strong programme which is set up really well. It’s up to me now to improve on the work that has already been done and make the project even more of a success.”
