Buxton reacts to last gasp winner: “That one was for the fans.”

  • Jake Buxton: “Tremendous effort from all the boys”
  • To the Latics fans: “They want to see the players giving everything”
  • Romantic Jake: “I forgot about Valentine’s Day, can you believe that?”
Latics’ unlikely goal hero Jake Buxton tells Latics Player HD he is delighted for the Latics fans after snatching a late winner at Molineux and his first goal for the club – but needs to buy some flowers on his way home.

ON VALENTINE’S DAY
I forgot about Valentine’s Day this morning, how about that? I’ll have to see if I can buy any flowers on the way home for the Mrs.

ON THE RESULT
Great result, well-earned and a vital three points, we grafted really hard, it wasn’t a great game, it was scrappy, but it was a typical Championship three games in a week sort of game, lots of tired legs, but to come away from home and get the win shows we’re still alive and fighting.

ON WOLVES
Wolves are a great club, but we got under their skin, got them frustrated and limited their passing so they were sending in long balls that me and Dan ate up. The boys did a tremendous job, they were disciplined.

ON THE STRIKERS
It was great to have Omar and Will up the field chasing down balls and holding up play, then to have the chance to bring on Gabby really helps to ease the pressure because they work so hard at the top end.

ON SCORING
The strikers do the work really. Will puts a great ball in for Gabby to run onto and win the corner. Max puts a great ball in and I do the easy bit, putting me head down, I close my eyes and head it and it goes in thankfully. But a great feeling.

ON THE LATICS FANS
I’m really happy for the fans, they put the money in on a Tuesday night to come all the way to the ground. I know it’s not been the best season but I would say try and stick with us and hopefully we’ll have something to shout about at the end of the season.

ON THE DERBY AGAINST PRESTON
We know what we’ve got to do, just as we did at Wolves, the supporters want to see their players scrapping for their lives, standing toe to toe with the opposition and trying to get the result. They want to see their team win and it’s going to be a big day for the supporters.
