Lang (42, 43)
Latics’ under-18 side continued their brilliant run of form with a superb 6-0 victory over Rochdale in the EFL Youth Alliance Cup Northern Section final.
Nick Chadwick’s side were at their clinical best to be five goals up by half-time as Tom Powell bagged a treble and Callum Lang also notched twice.
Sam Stubbs added the sixth early in stoppage time, as Latics set up a national final with either Luton Town or Bournemouth, who meet on Tuesday night.
Latics went ahead after just six minutes as Chris Merrie’s tackle was picked up by Lang, who then slid through to Powell who broke into box to finish through the Dale goalkeeper’s legs.
Lang was again the provider for Latics’ second just after the half hour mark as he dispossessed one of the Rochdale centre-backs and won the ball in the final third before squaring for Powell to score from close range.
Two minutes later and Latics had a third as good link up and one touch passing between the midfield trio of Merrie, Shane Donaghey and Luke Burgess led to Jamie Cotter collecting the ball before playing in Powell who wrapped up his hat-trick inside 37 minutes.
Lang made it four after an assist from Powell before, straight from the kick-off, the duo linked up against for Lang’s second and Chadwick’s side’s fifth before half-time
A memorable half and a fine performance despite wet and windy conditions, and it got better early in the second 45 as, after a free-kick delivery, Stubbs picked up the second ball and fired home his second goal of the season.
Now eight unbeaten, the under-18s remain full of confidence and will look to strengthen their league position between now and the end of the campaign.
Latics: Roberts, Golden, Taylor, Hilton (Plant 59), Stubbs, Donaghey (Downey 89), Burgess, Merrie, Powell (Malumo 71), Lang (Gelhardt 59), Cotter.
