Stoppage time goal scorer James McArthur says Latics are showing signs of their strength after late draw against Reading.

  • McArthur praises McManaman impact.
  • Potential showing in Latics squad.
  • Riera playing well and a real presence.

Speaking after scoring the stoppage time equaliser against Reading in the opening game of the Sky Bet Championship season on Saturday at the DW Stadium, midfielder James McArthur said the team will take the point considering the circumstances, and believes the squad has plenty of potential as the new campaign gets under way.

The Scottish international said:

“It was great to get the late equaliser, but we were disappointed with our second half performance.

“First half I thought we played very well, but we ran out of steam a bit.

“Second half as a team we got very deep and they put us under a lot of pressure which stopped us using our threats.”

Latics had led thanks to a goal from Callum McManaman just before the half an hour mark, but goals from Shaun Cummings and Sean Morrison had the Royals 2-1 up and looking like taking three points.

McArthur continued:

“From where we were at the time we’ll take that point and it could prove to be an important one down the line.

“The second half performance wasn’t like us, but we’ve got a few players coming back from injury like myself and Don Cowie, so in that sense it was good to be able to get the point.

“The bottom line for us is that when you go ahead in this league you need to go out and win the game.”

A number of players, including McArthur, came into the game on their way back from injury, giving the 27-year-old a positive outlook following the draw.

“There’s so much potential in this group,” he added.

“We’ve got a great squad and that showed in the players who came back in today like Shaun Maloney who has been out for a couple of weeks.

“We’re getting players back, we’re getting stronger and hopefully we’ll add a couple of players to the squad to complete it.”

McArthur popped up in the third minute of stoppage time to help Latics claim a point, and he held particular praise for the man who set him up, debutant Oriol Riera.

“It’s a nice ball in from Huwsy and Oriol, who has been playing very well, has done brilliantly to flick the ball on for me.

“Oriol’s a great presence up front, he’s not the biggest striker you’ll see, but he’s so strong and I took a chance that he would win the ball.

“He won the ball and from there all I needed to do was get it on target and thankfully I did.”
