Colombian striker and 2009/10 top goal scorers joins the Wall of Colour.

A new manager and a new season, but Colombian striker Hugo Rodallega had given us merely a glimpse of what he could do when he scored three times at the back end of the 2008/09 campaign.

His 10 goals in his first full season at the DW Stadium under Roberto Martinez not only earned him the position of leading goal scorer, but they also attributed directly to 13 of Latics’ 36 points, as the club staved off relegation by six points.

Charles N’Zogbia (who won Player of the Year) was a resounding choice from supporters for 2009/10 icon with 46% of the votes on Latics Wall, our biggest swing towards a player so far, but surely his year is yet to come (for THAT West Ham United performance alone).

Back to Rodallega though, and the Colombian international started the season in style, scoring arguably one of the goals of the entire competition that year when he rifled a right footed volley across goal and over the top of Brad Friedel from the right hand edge of the area.

That season he went on to score four match-winning goals, as Latics beat West Ham United, Sunderland, Liverpool and Burnley all 1-0 at home.

A man for the big occasion, Hugo’s goals against Burnley came in the last minute, and with his goal against Liverpool he became to first Latics player ever to score a winning goal against the Reds.

The then 24-year-old also had a hand in Latics’ first ever victory over Chelsea, earning and scoring a penalty to make it 2-1 in the eventual 3-1 win.

At the end of the season Rodallega’s Premier League tally in a Latics shirt stood at 13, and with his nine goals in the following campaign he went on to break Henri Camara’s all-time record of 20.

Was Hugo your choice for the 2009/10 icon? As mentioned the majority of supporters chose N’Zogbia in our poll on Latics Wall, but will you vote for the Frenchman again for 2010/11?
