Latics head into their first game of the 2014/15 season with confidence after a 1-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, courtesy of a 50th minute penalty from Louis Robles.

The 17-year-old striker netted his third goal of pre-season (two for the Development Squad), after he was brought down by Rovers’ goalkeeper just after half time.

A stifling hot day in Lancashire provided tough conditions for both sides, but Latics’ hard work and solid defensive unity throughout the team paid dividends.

Coach Peter Atherton praised his side for taking on the tactical information he gave out, signifying a growing improvement during pre-season, with the 1-0 victory adding to last week’s narrow 1-0 defeat against Everton which saw Latics put in an impressive performance.

Latics created a number of chances during against Blackburn and when the crucial one arrived, Robles took it in his stride.

An excellent reverse pass from Alex Cvetkovic found Robles’ diagonal run into the area, and with clever footwork he nudged the ball around the goalkeeper, only to be dragged down for a penalty.

Up stepped Robles and cool as you like he’d struck Latics in front.

High praise was given to centre back Mayowa Balogun for his performance throughout, and Latics held on to see out the victory with a mature performance.

Particular praise was also given to Under 16 striking duo Callum Lang and Chris Sang who gave the Rovers defence something to think about in the second half, the former completing 90 minutes and the latter replacing goal scorer Robles on 55.

After the game Peter Atherton summed up his thoughts, saying:

“It’s a very good result for us and it builds on an excellent draw against Everton last week.

“The lads were tested again because of the physicality of the game and in the conditions it was an excellent workout.

“Everybody is starting to understand what we want to do tactically, but we’ve got some way to go yet.”
