As well as talking about his own delight at tasting his first match minutes of the pre-season campaign after coming on as a second half substitute on Saturday, Scotland international midfielder James McArthur runs his eye for us over all the new arrivals at the DW Stadium this summer.
”It was good to get playing again, for sure, being injured is the worst part of being a footballer and to get that feeling of being out there on the park with boys was great,” he says.
“You never like to lose any game but you’ve got to look beyond that. The lads did really well in the first half, then with all the substitutions on both sides, the heat and humidity, it was a case of the managers trying to give as much playing time to as many players as possible.
“We’ve got a game against Paderborn on Friday and then we get ready for Reading. That’s all that matters.“
McArthur led by example on the pitch last season, but says all the established players at the club have a big role to play in helping the new players to adjust to life at Latics.
“The gaffer has done well to bring in six players so far, all the lads are fitting in well and they have integrated into the dressing room quickly,” he says.
“We all know how tough the Championship is and the key to every successful team is the strength of the team unit. This one is excellent and the new boys have only made it stronger.”
McARTHUR ON DON COWIE
No one will be surprised to hear that I was delighted when Don came in, he’s someone I know well from Scotland. He got his first minutes on the pitch on Saturday and I think the fans will absolutely love him.
He’s a real fighter, very good technically but also he’s got incredible energy. Plus he can score goals too. He knows this league very well, and more importantly how to get out of it, and I think he’s a tremendous signing for us.
McARTHUR ON ORIOL RIERA
He’s a threat, he looks like a great signing. It was good for him to get his goal on Saturday, all strikers need that and he could have had at least one more. He gets inside the box, makes really intelligent runs and is very difficult to mark.
We’ve not really had a player like him for a while, an out and out goalscorer and I think once we get used to him, he gets used to us and we can keep getting the service to him, he can be a really good player for us.
He speaks decent English already and he really seems like he wants to do well over here so hopefully the move will be a good one for everyone.
McARTHUR ON JAMES TAVERNIER
Another really good addition. A good athlete, he seems to have great energy and we’ve seen already his set piece deliveries are going to be a big asset for us this season. His goal at Rochdale was brilliant and it looks like he can play in two or three different roles which will be useful to the manager.
He’s a young guy, who really want to do well and looks like he’s going to be another very good signing.
McARTHUR ON ANDREW TAYLOR
Another very good signing, a great pro with good experience, which is vital. I know, like Don, there were other clubs who wanted him so the fact he’s come to us is not only good for the club, but a good sign that players of his quality want to come here over other options.
He’s as solid a full back as you’ll find in this division, who has played in the Premier League and Europe with Middlesbrough then helped Cardiff to promotion from the Championship. A terrific addition.
McARTHUR ON TAYLOR-SINCLAIR
What an athlete, he’s already taken stick that he needs to do a bit more upper body work.
I’m joking, this guy is powerful and I think he’s going to become a really good player.
It’s a great opportunity for him to come down from Scotland and I think once he gets fully adjusted, he’s going to make it hard for Tayls at left back and give good competition for the shirt, which is what everyone needs to drive them on.
McARTHUR ON EMYR HUWS
He hasn’t trained with us yet so we haven’t had a chance to meet him and see what he can do at close quarters. But I know how highly he’s rated at Man City, he’s been with them on pre-season and played a couple of games for them.
I also remember him from when we played at Birmingham at the end of last season and he was probably their best player on the night, who caused us a lot of problems. Another quality addition.
