- Emyr Huws to join Wigan on loan
- Six months deal from Manchester City
- Uwe Rosler back to old club for Wales international Huws
Wigan Athletic are delighted to confirm that a deal has been agreed with Manchester City for Wales international midfielder Emyr Huws to join in time for the start of the season.
The 19-year-old is currently with City on their pre-season tour of the USA but will return to join up with Latics during the pre-season.
The midfielder is highly thought of at the Etihad Stadium and Latics manager Uwe thinks it speaks volumes that his former club have trusted one of their players to him.
He said: “City are looking for Emyr to develop and as we have demonstrated in the past, top young players are able to come to us and improve, both on the field with regular playing time, but also off the field in terms of absorbing our first team training culture and discipline and helping them to improve every facet of their professional life.
“He is a very exciting player, I know him after working with him during a short spell I spent at City’s Academy in 2010-11 and he is clearly a very talented young player who has already broken through to the national squad, plus has played in the Championship.
“He is a silky left footer, versatile, who can dictate play with his passing, but who does not shy away from the physical demands of the Championship.”
Huws scored twice in 17 appearances at Birmingham City last season – and would have made it three but for a wonderful save by Scott Carson at St Andrews. His goal at Middlesbrough in fact won the club’s Goal of the Season award.
Signed from Swansea City in 2009, where he had been in the Academy during Roberto Martinez’s time in South Wales, the midfielder made his Manchester City debut and so far only appearance for the club in January 2014 in an FA Cup replay at home to Blackburn Rovers.
He was captain of City’s Development Squad prior to tasting first team league action at Northampton during the 12-13 season, alongside Lee Nicholls.
