James Tavernier’s non-competitive first start for Latics nearly got off to a flyer as Walsall held Uwe Rosler’s side to a 0-0 draw at Christopher Park on Friday afternoon.

The former Newcastle United full-back rattled the bar with a stinging 30-yard drive in the second of three 30-minute periods in Latics’ first domestic pre-season friendly.

Four of Rosler’s five summer signings featured with Don Cowie saved ahead of Tuesday’s friendly with Besiktas at the DW Stadium.

Lee Nicholls started the game in goal and made a couple of smart saves in the early stages with Jordan Cook and a Saddlers trialist both going close.

Tavernier had earlier gone close to breaking the deadlock, though he fired wide at the second attempt after being played in by Fraser Fyvie.

Marc-Antoine Fortune also had a good chance minutes later but the French frontman headed wide at the near post from Ryan Jennings’ cross.

The game proved a good run-out for both sides with every Latics player getting over 30 minutes under their belt.

Ivan Ramis saw a shot blocked from a Martyn Waghorn corner with Latics the more likely to open the scoring in the latter stages, though Ali Al Habsi had to be smart to deny Danny Webber for the visitors.

Latics: Nicholls (Al Habsi 46), Tavernier (Perch 46), Boyce (Ramis 46), Barnett (Rogne 60), Taylor (Taylor-Sinclair 60), Kiernan (Caldwell 60), Chow (Wilson 67), Fyvie (Waghorn 60), Fortune (Riera 46), McManaman (Jennings 71), Jennings (Waghorn 30)
