PREVIEW

Latics are set for their first domestic pre-season friendly on Friday afternoon (3pm kick-off) as Sky Bet League One side Walsall visit Christopher Park.

The game was originally scheduled to take place at Leigh Sports Village, though the pitch was deemed unsuitable following multiple events at the complex in recent weeks.

New signings Oriol Riera, Don Cowie, James Tavernier, Andrew Taylor and Aaron Taylor-Sinclair could all feature for the first time in a Latics shirt in England as the Saddlers make the journey up from the Midlands.

Dean Smith, who is the third longest serving manager in the third tier, will run the rule over his new additions James O’Connor, Tom Bradshaw and Jordan Cook as he prepares Walsall for their season opener at Port Vale in just under a month’s time.

Latics started their pre-season campaign with a 3-1 win over German outfit TSV Havelse and, following the visit of the Saddlers, they host Besiktas before travelling to Rochdale to complete their domestic preparations.
