Last night our Football and Sports branch of the Community Trust held an awards evening at the DW Stadium celebrating the achievements of last season’s Wigan Athletic Ability Counts Football League teams.
Hosted by Chris Baxter, our Men’s Health and Disability Co-Ordinator, the players looked back on a successful season for themselves individually, as well as for the team as a whole. Each player was awarded with a medal from Wigan Athletic mascot’s Phoenix and Blue.
Frank Melling, a volunteer with Wigan Athletic Ability Counts said of the teams: ‘It’s great to see clubs like Wigan Athletic getting involved with the Ability Counts league’.
‘The league gives players with disabilities the opportunity to get involved with football and play in regular competitive games.’
The teams are linked with the Community Trust’s Just Join In scheme, which aims to provide schools in Wigan with football and sports coaching for young people with disabilities.
The Just Join In scheme receives funding from the Premier League and the PFA Community Fund.
Both the under-18 and men’s teams play in the Greater Manchester Ability Counts Football League, alongside other teams from Manchester United, Manchester City and Oldham Athletic.
Training sessions and matches are completely free, and are based at the Wigan Youth Zone on Tuesday evenings.
The team are currently looking for new members to join the youth team for the 2014-15 season. If you or a family member are interested in joining the team, please contact Chris Baxter on 01942 488530, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
