Martyn Waghorn chosen as Young Player of The Year.

Martyn Waghorn has picked up the ‘Young Player of The Year’ award, announced at the Wigan Athletic Player of The Season Dinner tonight at the DW Stadium.

The 24 year-old has been a revelation since arriving initially on loan from Leicester City in January, so much so he was offered a three year contract in March and he has now signed on permanently with the club.

South Shields-born Waghorn scored five goals in 14 Championship matches since arriving, assisting on many others and manager Uwe Rosler, who chose the winner, felt his impact has been such that he deserved the award, despite only being at the DW for four months.

He said: “Waggy has been brilliant for us, scoring and assisting on many crucial goals in the run to the Play-Offs and we are all delighted that he has agreed to sign on long-term.

“He fits in exactly to the mould we are looking for, young, hungry players and considering he is a former England Under 21 international, to get a player of his calibre for free was a terrific bit of business.

“Hopefully he will continue to be a real favourite at the DW.“
