Uwe Rosler on an exciting night at the DW Stadium as Latics draw 2-2 with Leicester.

The drama continued for Wigan Athletic in the Sky Bet Championship with a 2-2 draw against league leaders Leicester City in a match which Uwe Rosler described as “the best game of football I’ve seen this season.”

Rosler heaped praise on the application of his players throughout the evening, and despite being disappointed at not seeing the game out, he said the bigger picture revealed a lot about his team.

“I think it was the best game of football I’ve seen this season.

“There is a reason why Leicester are the best team in the league and I’m very happy with how we took the game to them today.

“When you concede three minutes from the end of a game of course you are not happy, but seeing the bigger picture and looking at what we put into the performance today makes me very happy.”

Rosler continued:

“Unfortunately we are left with a disappointed feeling because we conceded so late and couldn’t hold on, but we have to give credit to the opposition for that.

“Both teams attacked each other and it was an exciting game and overall I’m very happy with how we played in the second half and I felt like we controlled it.”

Another big performance from central defender Rob Kiernan shone through on the night at the DW Stadium, and he capped off his game with his first ever professional goal to give Latics a 2-1 lead.

His manager complimented his performance, saying:

“I’ve got to highlight Rob Kiernan tonight who played very well and for a player who has only just come into the team he was very mature.

“It was great to see him score a goal, but I’ve got to focus on the way he played as well.

“He was full of confidence and maturity, he handled the opposition very well and I think it will only get better for him after this game.

“Rob deserves a lot of credit because there is a lot of competition for places at the back with Leon Barnett, Thomas Rogne and Gary Caldwell all coming back.”

It was a buoyant evening at the DW Stadium for large periods as the crowd fed off Latics’ performance, and Rosler hopes the fans didn’t leave to the stadium too disappointed with the result.

“I told the players that if we matched Leicester’s application and tempo then we would have a good chance to win the game and that’s exactly what we did, but unfortunately we couldn’t see it out.

“The crowd seemed happy at the end, but I understand if they are a little bit disappointed because we should have had the game buried in the second half.

“It was a great atmosphere tonight and the fans were superb, it made for a very good environment to play football in.”
