Match Preview

Wigan Athletic return to action at the DW Stadium on Tuesday night looking to maintain their current form which has seen them record victories in each of their last six games, including Sunday’s magnificent win over Manchester City in the FA Cup with Budweiser.

Sunday’s win came at a cost however with Chris McCann taken off at half time with what turn out to be a multiple fracture of the right patella (knee-cap), an injury that could keep the 26-year-old out of action for the remainder of the season. The news is a bitter blow following the loss of Ben Watson three weeks ago.

On a brighter note Shaun Maloney and Gary Caldwell are getting closer to a return with both players back in training with the team. Maloney will play some part in the development squad fixture on Wednesday afternoon against Morecambe at the Club’s Christopher Park training ground.

Martyn Waghorn, Ryan Tunnicliffe and Rob Kiernan come back into contention after being cup-tied for the game at the Etihad Stadium.

For the visitors Chelsea loanee Sam Hutchinson will miss the game after being sent off in The Owls’ 2-0 defeat at Yeovil on Saturday. David Prutton could be in contention for a return to the Wednesday midfield after playing in a development quad last week.

Former Latics ‘keeper Chris Kirkland could be set to return from a calf problem.
