WIGAN ATHLETIC 2
The Development Squad moved four points clear at the top of the Final Third Development League with a 2-0 victory over third place Wrexham, courtesy of a Michael Wilson header and a cool finish from Ryan Jennings in the second half.
Latics got themselves back on track after a narrow 1-0 defeat against Walsall last week, with this victory leaving them in a healthy position with just four games remaining.
Among the starters for Latics and providing first team experience to a young side were Mike Pollitt and Thomas Rogne, as well as Fraser Fyvie who stepped up his recovery from an injury which cut short his loan spell at Shrewsbury Town.
Latics enjoyed a relatively comfortable first half, with a majority share of the possession in difficult conditions as the wind got up behind them.
Jumping into action in the second half, centre back Michael Wilson broke the deadlock on 59 minutes when he headed in a Jack Phillips corner at the near post to claim his first goal of the season.
Exciting winger Ryan Jennings doubled the lead on 75 minutes, when he turned in from around 15 yards, meeting a cross from the right side.
Latics maintained a high tempo in the second half and created a number of chances, but were happy with their two goal advantage, seeing the game out to extend their lead at the summit of the division.
