Shakerley youngsters given the chance for a training ground tour

A group of young people from Shakerley who take part in weekly football coaching with Wigan Athletic Community Trust were given the chance for a behind the scenes tour of the Club’s Christopher Park Training Ground last week.

The Midnight League programme which is supported by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and the Football League Trust provides football and sports coaching for young people between the ages of 12-19, two nights a week for 48 weeks of the year.

As well as taking part in sport, participants are also encouraged to volunteer on the project and are given the chance to gain sports qualifications.

The visit to Christopher Park was a reward for regular attendance at and for helping out at sessions.

As well as a tour of the facilities the young people got the chance to meet the Latics first team squad before watching manager Uwe Rosler put them through their paces on the training pitch.

Tom Drake who runs the Midnight League project for the Community Trust said: “The lads have worked really hard coming to session’s week in week out regardless of the weather so it was great to be able to reward them with a trip to Christopher Park.

“Hopefully meeting the players will inspire them to stay involved in and to continue to help out at sessions. We’re very grateful to the Manager and the players for allowing us to go.”
