A Wigan primary schools football team has taken its first steps to playing at Wembley by winning the Wigan heat of the 2014 Football League Kids Cup.
St Thomas’s Primary School from Ashton beat of competition from 44 other schools to be crowned champions in the Under 11 tournament organised by Wigan Athletic Community Trust last week.
Having beaten Sacred Heart Primary School 6- 3 in the final at the Powerleague they will now go on and represent the Latics in the North West heat of the competition.
All 72 Clubs in the Football League take part in the annual competition, and those schools lucky enough to make it through to the national finals will get to play on the Wembley turf before the Play Off finals in May.
For winning the tournament the pupils from St Thomas’s were given a trophy, medals and tickets to a home game this season at the DW Stadium when they will get to meet first team players before kick-off.
The school was also presented with a signed Wigan Athletic home shirt to display in the school.
As part of its new Team Latics Schools Sports programme, Wigan Athletic Community Trust is offering primary schools in Wigan 25 hours of free high quality football and sports coaching.
