Wigan Athletic stars Grant Holt and James McArthur were joined by Wigan Olympian Jenny Meadows last week to launch a new scheme designed to get more young people physically active through athletics.
The event was part of the Premier League 4 Sport scheme organised by Wigan Athletic Community Trust which uses the branding of Wigan Athletic to encourage young people between the ages of 14 – 18 to take part in more sport.
Jenny, who competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and is a former 800 metres World and European Championship medallist, helped to coach a group of young people from Deanery High School at the Robin Park’s Arena.
During the coaching session Latics players Grant and James acted as timekeepers for the running races before having a go at javelin throwing for themselves.
Jenny said: “I am really pleased to be able to work with Wigan Athletic Community Trust to help develop athletics here in Wigan.
“We have lots of talented young athletes in the area and with Wigan Athletic providing extra sessions through the Premier League 4 Sport programme I really want to make sure these young people are given as many opportunities as possible in athletics.
“It is fantastic to see young people enjoying athletics, something which has brought me so much success and enjoyment so far in my career.”
With support from the Premier League and Sport England, Wigan Athletic Community Trust has been running the Premier League 4 Sport programme since 2009.
Each week over 400 young people take part in basketball, table tennis, badminton and volleyball coaching and the Trust has just added tennis and athletics to its offer.
Premier League 4 Sport Co-ordinator Chris Pearce said: “To have someone like Jenny come to sessions to help inspire young athletes was fantastic.
“Grant and James got stuck in as well and hopefully athletics will prove to be just as successful as the other sports we deliver through Premier League 4 Sport.”
