Wigan Athletic prepare for the visit of the Rams to the DW Stadium

Wigan Athletic v Derby County
Sky Bet Championship
Sunday 1 December 2013, kick off 3.00pm
DW Stadium

Match Preview

Wigan Athletic are looking to bounce back from a disappointing night in the Europa League where a late Junior Malanda strike denied them what would have been a crucial point against Zulte Waregem and left qualification in their own hands going in the the final group stage game.  Owen Coyle must now pick up his players as Derby visit the DW Stadium in order to find a way to avoid a third home defeat in eight days.

Steve McClaren's side arrive on Sunday after a run of games that has seen them win four of their last seven.  Since Nigel Clough's dismissal following their defeat to local rivals Nottingham Forest at the end of September, the Rams have notched up wins against Leeds, Watford, Sheffield Wednesday and Bournemouth, earn two draws against Ipswich and Birmingham with their only defeat coming at Loftus Road at the beginning of November.

The two sides have met on eleven previous occasions with Latics having the edge with five wins to Derby's three (one of which was in the FA Cup).  The match has ended in a draw three times.

The last meeting was in the Premier League in 2008 when goals from Paul Scharner and Antonio Valencia secured a 2-0 win to complete the double over the Rams.

Team News

Wigan were joined by Will Keane from Manchester United shortly before the loan window closed on Thursday.  It could prove to be an interesting day for the Keane family as twin brother Michael joined Derby on Thursday.  The delight at Keane's arrival was somewhat dampened by the news that winger Marc Albrighton was recalled by Paul Lambert despite the player wishing to remain at the DW Stadium for an extended loan spell and much to the disappointment of Owen Coyle.

Gary Caldwell has been seen on the training pitch with the rest of the first team squad this week but he is not expected to play any part just yet.  Ali Al Habsi has also joined in training with the rest of the Wigan Athletic 'keepers along with Scott Carson who picked up an injury in the warm up at Charlton a month ago but Owen Coyle has already said Lee Nicholls will start on Sunday.  Shaun Maloney remains sidelined but Ivan Ramis can't be too far away from being in contention for a place on the bench after several outings with the reserves.

For Steve McClaren's Derby side, midfielder James Bailey and defender Mark O'Brien are in contention for a place in the squad having come through a reserve team game this week giving the manager plenty of options ahead of Sunday.  Jamie Ward will miss out however having picked up a knee injury.
