Barratt Legacy Programme helps fund disability football scheme.

A football coaching programme for school pupils with special educational needs in Wigan has been saved after the Barratt Legacy Programme stepped in to join forces with Wigan Athletic Community Trust.

The Barratt Legacy Programme has provided support to the Community Trust to provide one hour a week football and sports coaching in Wigan’s five special schools over the next 12 months.

The Just Join In scheme has been running for the last three years and sessions help to improve pupil’s health and wellbeing and to rich their experience of school.

Before last week’s home game against Brighton representatives from the Barratt Legacy Programme presented the Community Trust with a cheque for £4,500 to fund the coaching scheme for an extra year.

Head of Community Tom Flower said: “In the past when we have run this programme we have seen significant benefits with the pupils we coach,”

“It is a fun way for them to get active and enjoy sport and that has a knock-on effect by helping youngsters get fitter and healthier and it is a great way for us as their local football club to connect with them.”

Barrett sales adviser at the Blundell’s Wood development, Stephen Fairclough-Speed, said that teaming up with the Wigan Athletic Community Trust to deliver the schools programme was important for the community.

“Everybody knows how important sport an active lifestyle is for children,” he said. “That is why we are proud to help ensure that these five schools in Wigan are able to access the high-quality, fun coaching Wigan Athletic Community Trust offer.

“Hopefully restarting this programme will give the youngsters who take part the chance to develop a passion for sport that will last a lifetime and help them lead a healthy lifestyle.”
