Wigan Athletic Community Trust has been awarded a new grant from the Premier League Charitable Fund to help it to support Wigan primary schools in organising PE and sport.
The funding, worth £270,000 over the next three years, means that the Community Trust can now provide primary schools in Wigan with up to 25 hours free football and sports coaching.
The innovative scheme is called the Team Latics Schools Sport programme and will involve the Trust working with up to 70 schools a year and organising:
- Five full days of football and sports curriculum coaching for a five week period at each school
- Five week after schools sports club at each school
- Termly football competitions for Year 5 pupils
- Teacher training days to allow teachers to learn from Wigan Athletic Academy coaches.
The Team Latics Schools Sports programme will also see the Community Trust working alongside coaches from the Club’s Academy to help to identify talented footballers in the Borough’s schools.
Head of Community, Tom Flower said: “This new investment from the Premier League Charitable Fund means we can significantly increase our offer of sports coaching to Wigan primary schools.
“Over the last few years we have steadily increased the amount of schools we work with and the Team Latics sport scheme now means we can provide high quality football and sports coaching to over 10,000 young people a year in Wigan schools.”
Every pupil in the programme will get a free Team Latics t-shirt and their schools the chance to receive match tickets as part of the Club’s Junior Group Ticket scheme.
