Latics progressed to the second round of the Youth Alliance Cup after a barnstorming 3-3 draw and 4-3 penalty shootout victory.

It was a back and forth affair which saw Latics take the lead three times, with Sam Cosgrove netting a brace and the impressive Declan Poole bursting from central midfield to add one of his own.

Lloyd Bannister's goal was even more crucial though, as he took Latics' fifth and winning penalty in the shootout after full time.

Cosgrove's first of two goals gave Latics an early lead just seven minutes in as he thumped in a bullet header from an Adrian Purzycki corner.

By half time Fleetwood had scored their first of three equalisers, but Latics weren't deterred as Poole put them ahead again just eight minutes after the restart, latching onto a Matthew Hamilton flick on inside his own half, before racing through on goal and firing left footed across the goalkeeper.

A minute later and Fleetwood were level again after a back post header from a corner was turned in as it came back across goal, giving Latics the task of pushing for the lead once more.

That lead came just 13 minutes later when the overlapping run of right back Danny Leigh provided a front post cross for Cosgrove to turn in his second of the game.

Unfortunately for Latics the lead didn't last long and Fleetwood grabbed their third equaliser of the afternoon to send the game to penalties.

Cosgrove maintained his scoring run for the day netting the first penalty, but strike partner Hamilton couldn't put his away.

Omar Carey and Mayowa Balogun followed up to slot home their spot kicks, before Bannister scored the winner to send Latics through.

After the game Under 18s coach John Doolan said he was pleased with progression in the cup:

"The main thing is I'm happy because we got through.

"We're a little disappointed because we let three goals in, but the lads have been working very hard defensively recently with some very solid clean sheets.

"We'll look forward to the next round and hopefully we can keep going."
