Midfielder hails deserved win and looks towards the weekend.

Speaking after last night’s 3-1 Europa League victory against Maribor, James McArthur praised his side’s performance saying:

“We sealed our first home game in Europe with the perfect result.

“I thought we played excellently especially in the first half.”

After going into half time 2-0 thanks to goals from Nick Powell and Ben Watson, Maribor pulled a goal back, giving Latics a challenge to hold on for the points, something which McArthur believes could have been a bit more comfortable.

“Maribor came back into it in the second half, but over the 90 minutes I think we thoroughly deserved to win it and we could have even done it more comfortably.

“We had to concentrate that extra bit once they scored their goal and we need to start keeping clean sheets on a regular basis.

“As a team we need to make sure we concentrate right the way through the game because I think we made it a little bit harder for ourselves than it needed to be throughout the team.”

As well as his two-goal haul in the game, forward Nick Powell had a number of chances to add to his tally, something which McArthur joked that he himself could have got in on.

“Nick was excellent, but the one that he tries to chip over the ‘keeper’s head was a little bit frustrating because I was right beside him ready to put it in.

“Joking aside, he’s got a lot in his locker and he’s going to score goals for this club because even though he’s not an out-and-out striker, he’s got a great eye for goal.

“He got two, but in fairness he could have had five.”

Looking ahead to Sunday’s Championship game against Blackburn Rovers, McArthur said that victory in the Europa League will be a welcome boost.

“It’s important for us all that we get victories at this level of football and it’s a confidence boost for everyone going into the league game.

“Beating Maribor is a big thing for us because it brushes off what happened last weekend against Watford and the disappointment of defeat.

“Now we’ve got to use it to turn this win into points in the Championship so that we can push on up the league table.”
