Wigan Athletic create more history on Thursday night as they welcome European opposition to Wigan for the first time in a competitive match in the first of three home Group D UEFA Europa League games. Slovenian side NK Maribor are the opposition as Owen Coyle's side will look to build on a hard earned away point in Belgium against SV Zulte Waregem two weeks ago.
Maribor come into this fixture on the back of three defeats in their last four games and having just replaced their head coach with Ante Šimundža who spent 7 years as a striker at the club scoring 60 goals in 170 games. This will be the 42-year-old's first game in charge.
Wigan Athletic are also looking to find some consistency with results, however performances have not concerned the manager Owen Coyle who insists that the team could well have picked up more points were it not for a number of refereeing decisions at key moments in games this season.
Owen Coyle said in his pre-match press conference that there will not be as many changes as have been made in previous games as he looks to maintain a more consistent line-up. He also said that Jordi Gome, who was sat alongside him in that press conference that Jordi Gomez will definitely play. Grant Holt, Gary Gary Caldwell, Ivan Ramis, Ali Al Habsi and Shaun Maloney will all continue to be missing through injury.
