Wigan young people win home international football tournament.

A group of young people from Shakerley have been crowned champions of Great Britain having represented England in a football tournament against teams from Wales and Scotland.

The Under 16 tournament in Cardiff was organised by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust as part of the Midnight Leagues programme which sees Wigan Athletic Community coaches provide free football and sports coaching for 12 – 19 year olds in Shakerley on a Thursday and Friday evening.

To get the chance to play in Cardiff they had to beat teams representing Derby County, Port Vale, Hartlepool United, Rotherham United at a tournament at the Wigan Youth Zone before the Latics home game against Middlesbrough in August.

As well as playing in the tournament, the young people also got to chance to watch the Cardiff City vs Everton match at the Liberty Stadium as guests of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust.

Gaz Nolan from Wigan Athletic Community Trust who helped to coach the side said: “The lads were a credit to themselves and the Club. They played really well at the tournament at the Youth Zone and then even better in Cardiff. They loved every minute of it.”

Midnight League sessions take place on the Shakerley common and every Thursday and Friday evening between 6pm and 8pm.
