Latics’ Europa League opponents give their verdict on Owen Coyle’s side

Zulte Waregem Manager Francky Dury is expected a tough test from Wigan Athletic at the Jan Breydel Stadion on Thursday evening on matchday one of the 2013/14 Europa League.

Dury is anticipating a physical encounter against Latics after studying a number of our recent performances, and in the game’s pre-match press conference at the stadium said:

“We have watched the last few games played by Wigan Athletic and I think that they are a team who is physically very strong, with two central defenders and Marc-Antoine Fortune in particular.

“They have lots of qualities in taking possession of the ball so I think the transition of play will be an important factor in the game.

“I suspect it will be a close game but I hope we can play how we want to play tomorrow.”

Zulte suffered their first defeat of the season in their last match against Genk in the Belgian Pro League, slipping to a 5-2 defeat, but Dury is confident his side will be fully focused on bouncing back against Latics on Thursday, explaining:

“We don’t look backwards, only forwards. Genk are a very good side and it was a difficult game for us, especially as we had to substitute Steve Colpaert at half-time with an injury.

“We hope to be strong for this game though and play our game.”

Thorgan Hazard, brother of Chelsea attacker, Eden and on loan from the Blues himself, also spoke of the calibre of opposition his side are set to face, pointing to last season’s FA Cup Final as proof of Latics’ strength:

“Being an English team I’m sure Wigan Athletic are at a very good level despite being relegated last season.

“They beat Manchester City in the FA Cup Final so they must be a very good team, and in the Europa League you are only going to be play against very good teams.

“I saw the highlights from that game and thought it was a good thing that they were able to win the cup, I was very impressed.”
