The 13th annual Wigan Borough Sports Awards took place at the DW Stadium earlier in the month, with 400 people attending the event organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust in order to recognise the achievement and dedication of sports people, coaches and volunteers in Wigan.
For the second year running Wigan Athletic Community Trust sponsored the volunteer of the year category which was won by Bob and Barbara Haggarty from Standish Cricket Club.
Bob and Barbara undertake a variety of roles within the club including groundwork, cleaning, teas and general maintenance and are at club for five hours every day of the cricket season.
Chris Pearce, from the Community Trust who helped to select the winners said: “There were lots of strong entries for the category but Bob and Barbara’s commitment to Standish Cricket Club shown through.
“Without volunteers such as Bob and Barbara, sports clubs would not be able to exist and Wigan Athletic Community Trust was happy to help recognise their contribution to sports in Wigan.”
The couple were presented with their trophy by Wigan Warriors legend Kris Radlinski and also received a pre-match meal for two before a Latics home game at the DW Stadium courtesy of the Trust.
Also shortlisted for the Volunteer of the Year Award were Dave Tweed from England Amputee Football Association and John Davenport from Wigan St Jude’s Amateur Rugby League Football Club.
