Win against Forest boosts Latics as Boyce calls for momentum.

Following Latics’ 2-1 victory against Nottingham Forest at the DW Stadium yesterday, captain Emmerson Boyce revealed his delight at claiming the three points and the manner of the performance.

The 33-year-old said that every aspect of the win was important, none more so than turning two home draws into a victory against one of the Championship’s form sides.

“It was always going to be a difficult game and our results haven’t been the best at home lately so we’re very happy with the win.

“A big pleasing thing for us is that we showed character again to come from behind and win against a very good Nottingham Forest side, a team that had only conceded one goal before our game.”

Boyce admitted that the manner of the goals conceded by the team recently has been disappointing and added that there was a clear aim to be more solid at the back.

“Before the game the manager told us to be stronger at the back because that’s where every team can build from,” he added.

“Other than a very good free kick we kept out a Forest side who know how to score goals.

“Everybody at the back was outstanding and we’ve set a standard for ourselves now which we need to keep up.

“We know ourselves that we can score goals and we’ve always had goals in us, we’ve just been disappointed with some of the goals we’ve conceded recently.”

Praising the efforts of every player on the pitch, Boyce said:

“The defence is getting stronger, the midfield is working hard and I thought Marco (Fortune) was superb today up front.

“He was unlucky not to score when he hit the cross bar but we still scored from that and he played his part in both goals.

“We’re going to need everyone working hard like that this season.”

With the international break coming up, Boyce said that winning against Forest was vital in creating momentum.

“The international breaks can sometimes be good or bad and I think this will be good for us because we’re going into it having picked up three points.

“Good luck to all of the players going out representing their countries and hopefully they can come back injury free with some good results and then we can hit the ground running again.”
