After yesterday’s 1-0 defeat to AFC Bournemouth at the Goldsands Stadium James McCarthy admitted the performance wasn’t good enough but focused on making sure improvements were made.
The 22-year-old said:
“We’re happy we’ve got the game on Tuesday because it’s so soon after this defeat.
“It means we can get back out there and improve our performance because it wouldn’t have been nice to have to wait a whole week to put things right.
“We’ll have a right go at it on Tuesday and prove to the fans that we want to win for them.”
On the performance against Bournemouth McCarthy added:
“We should have handled today much better than we did, too many of us were slack and if we really want to be up there fighting for promotion we need to perform better.
“It’s important that we stick together as a unit and we need to get past difficult games like this and come to tough grounds like Bournemouth’s and pick up points.
“It’s frustrating to come here and not even get a point and to be honest we’re better than that.”
With the Cherries taking all three points from yesterday’s game, McCarthy said that after Latics’ second have efforts with ten men should have seen them claim a point.
“We created some chances and looked like we could have nicked something in the end.
“We gave it a go in the second half even when we went down to ten men.
“If we had got a point I think we would have just about deserved it because they sat in for the last 20 minutes and tried to soak up the pressure we created.
“We’ve got the right attitudes to make sure we are much better come Tuesday night in front of our home crowd.”
