Yesterday's 1-0 loss to Scottish Premiership side Dundee United hasn't faltered the ambitions of James McArthur who speaking after yesterday's game said the team's hopes of a positive start to the season are on a high.
"It was great to be back on the DW pitch," said McArthur.
"We didn't play as well as we know we can but we'll mark this one down as experience and make sure that we're ready for next week.
"I firmly believe we can get a good start to the season because we've gained momentum despite losing yesterday and the mix of new players has added even more quality to what we already had."
On the performance against the Tangerines the 25-year-old added:
"The performance was good at times but I don't think we did ourselves justice.
"We had numerous chances to win the game and we need to make sure that by next week when we get those opportunities we take them."
Yesterday saw seven of Owen Coyle's eight new faces at the club make their first appearances at the DW Stadium and McArthur says it's been a real boost with his new team mates settling in.
"There's been a really easy transition into the squad from the new players.
"The good thing is that the gaffer has brought in the right type of characters and players with real quality.
"Hopefully we can still get a few more because this year we're going to need a big squad."
With Barnsley up next for Latics on Saturday August 3, McArthur says the team are raring to go.
"We're all looking forward to giving it our all to win the Championship.
"The most important thing is to get rid of that disappointment from last season and get back into the Premier League.
"Our natural ambition as a group will hopefully push us on to do that.
"I love this club and I'm looking forward to the challenge ahead."
