MATCH PREVIEW

Wigan Athletic host Dundee United at 3pm on Saturday at the DW Stadium in the final pre-season game of the summer ahead of the Championship kick off against Barnsley at Oakwell on August 3.

Latics go into the game looking to make it six wins from six pre-season friendlies, after victories over Columbus Crew, Dayton Dutch Lions, Pittsburgh Riverhounds, Atromitos and most recently Morecambe on Wednesday night.

Dundee United on the other hand recorded their first pre-season win on Wednesday when they beat Dunfermline 3-1, there three other previous fixtures ended in defeats to Union Berlin, Energie Cottbus and Spanish side San Roque.

Managed by former Celtic and Wolverhampton Wanderers full back Jackie McNamara, Dundee United finished sixth in the Scottish Premier League last season.

They will this season compete in the first ever Scottish Professional Football League game when they take on newly promoted Partick Thistle in the Scottish Premiership on August 2 as part of the restructure of Scottish football.

McNamara's team has begun to take shape during pre-season with arrivals and departures, as they sealed the signatures of Calum Butcher and Kudus Oyenuga from Hayes and Yeading but lost 2012/13 top goal scorer Johnny Russell to Derby County.

In recent seasons the club has tasted relative success with a Scottish Cup win in 2009/10 and three consecutive seasons of European football, playing in the qualifying rounds of the Europa league in 2010/11, 2011/12 and 2012/13.

Europe has been a happy hunting ground for the Arabs and they even hold a 100% record against Spanish giants Barcelona, who they beat twice in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1966/67 and in the UEFA Cup in 1986/87 on their way to the final as they finished runners-up to IFK Goteborg.

During their 26 European campaigns, Dundee United have faced sides such as Juventus, Monaco, PSV Eindhoven, Roma and Manchester United and can also boast a European Cup semi-final appearance during the 1983/84 season.

Latics' fan-favourite Jason De Vos signed for the club from Dundee United in 2001 having spent three years at Tannadice Park.

He's not the only one with history between the two teams, as former Latics forward Jason Scotland was a Scottish Cup runner-up with the Terrors in 2004/05, with former defender Andy Webster going one better in 2009/10 as he captained the side to Scottish Cup glory.

Latics manager Owen Coyle spent two years at Tannadice from 1995-1997, before returning to the club during the 2003/04 season in a player-coach capacity.

TEAM NEWS

Thomas Rogne has taken part in training for the first time since picking up a calf strain last week and manager Owen Coyle has indicated that he could be in contention to get some game time on Saturday to provide a much needed boost to numbers in the defensive positions.

The long term injury list still includes Gary Caldwell (hips), Ali Al Habsi (shoulder) and Ivan Ramis (knee).

HEAD TO HEAD

The two sides have met once previously, also in a pre-season friendly. The game was played in August 2010 at Tannadice Park when Latics where 3-1 winners with goals for Latics from Victor Moses and two for Mauro Boselli.
