Last night marked Marc-Antoine Fortuné’s fourth goal in five pre-season games as he instinctively whipped in the winning goal in Latics’ fifth victory in pre-season against Morecambe
It was the French forward’s second goal in three days after scoring a similarly impressive goal against Atromitos
at Leigh Sports Village on Monday.
The 32-year-old said it’s vital to get momentum building:
“I’m really happy with the goals I’ve been getting and it’s helping my confidence to grow ahead of the new season.
“It’s good to score goals at this stage but we have to make sure that continues when we start the league season on August 3.
“Scoring goals at this stage is more for confidence than having the statistic of scoring four goals.”
The striker’s instinctive efforts don’t come without the help of his team mates though as he explains:
“Naturally I just shoot because that’s what strikers do.
“My main aim is just to get the ball on target and the last two goals I’ve just taken that chance and they’ve flown in.
“But it’s about creating those chances as a team and Jean Beausejour showed how excellent the service is in the team last night.”
On Beausejour and match preparation Fortuné added:
“Jean is a really good player and we’ve got a good understanding and relationship on the pitch which worked perfectly for the goal last night.
“His assist was the perfect weight and those sorts of things are what everyone has been working on in training and hopefully we’ll all be ready for the season and be able to show what we’ve been working on.”
Chants of Fortuné’s name could be heard last night following his match-winning goal and it’s something he assures hasn’t gone unnoticed:
“I hope the fans are happy from what they’ve seen from me so far and from the team as a whole.
“I’d like to thank the supporters for singing my name like they did against Morecambe, it was very nice to hear that.
“I’ve got a good feeling about this season and I always try to give my best for the fans and the club.
“I’ll give everything for the club this season and hopefully that will make people happy."
