Match Preview

Latics play their final match on their USA tour this evening, in the spectacular setting of the Highmark Stadium against local side the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. It is not difficult to see how the club got its name.

Set on the banks of the River Monongahela, the stadium sits opposite the skyscrapers of downtown Pittsburgh, a stone’s throw from the City’s two more famous sporting clubs, The Pittsburgh Steelers American Football team and the Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball side.

The Manager Said

“You can see this is a sports mad city,” said Latics manager Own Coyle, “so I’m pleased that the club can do its bit to try and promote soccer in this part of the world. It is a growing sport, you could see that last night when so many people turned up for our open training session.”

On an artificial surface, at least the team will not face the same issues as the previous match but the heat will certainly play its part, although that will improve for the second half when the sun begins to set and Coyle is hoping to once again give as many of the players as long on the pitch as possible.

“We’ve picked up one or two bumps and bruises along the way so one or two of the players will miss out tonight but that is completely normal for pre-season, as the players fitness begins to peak as we reach August 3rd and it’s a case of resting those that need it so that we are at full strength when it really matters for the start of the season.”
