Latics Republic of Ireland international James McCarthy marked his return to the side with a goal after just a minute of coming on the field against Columbus Crew last night and he was delighted to be able to make a contribution.
“It was a really tough game against a physically strong team and they were looking to get one over on a team from England, you could see that straight away.
“The boys did really well and it was great to be able to get a win under our belt, that was important for the gaffer.”
And as for his own contribution, he was quick to deflect the praise away from himself.
“It was all about the ball from Roger, different class. When I saw his run down the left and the ball coming in all I had to do was get on the end of it really but, whether it’s pre season or a league match, it’s always a great feeling when it goes in the back of the net.”
McCarthy joined pre-season late after being given an extra week following international duty and he says he has been playing catch up for a few days.
“It was hard for the first couple of days because the boys were ahead of me fitness wise, but I always keep myself in decent shape so I’ve just had to get my head down and work.”
McCarthy said the spirit in the camp has been excellent and changes on and off the field has only served to bring everyone together.
The gaffer seems really positive and you can see the energy he has and he’s got everyone going. He’s brought in a lot of boys quickly but they all seem to be a really great bunch and there’s a spirit there already between everyone, all the new boys who want to prove something, and the boys who have been here a while who also need to make a good impression for the gaffer.”
