Striker admits it was time for him to look for a new challenge and Wigan Athletic is the perfect opportunity.

Grant Holt became Wigan Athletic's new number 9 this week and immediately the Carlisle-born striker declared his intention to give the Latics supporters as much joy as he's given to Canaries fans over the last four years.

"I'm very happy, there's been a lot of speculation for a while that it's been happening but I'm delighted to get over the line and get started on a new challenge.

"I can't speak highly enough of the way the Norwich fans have treated me and hopefully they'll feel the same about me.  But you can't stay at a club forever unfortunately, you've got to move on and look for new challenges.  I knew that Norwich had brought people in and the majority of my games would have been sliced this year but I was ready to move and hopefully I can come here and have the same respect and give the fans here the same joy."

The 32-year is also looking forward to being re-united with a couple of former teammates as well as getting to know some of the existing squad for whom he has much respect.

"I was with James Perch at Forest and Stephen Crainey at Blackpool I and know a few of the other lads from playing against them but it's a fantastic sqaud.

"We also have a number of players from last season who are quality and I'm sure the people he (Owen Coyle) brings in will be fantastic for the club."

Whilst getting the goals to return to the Premier League will be Holt's main focus, something he did 68 times in 174 appearances for Norwich, he says there's no reason why the team and fans can't enjoy the European experience too.

"Obviously the league is the main priority and everyone know that is the main aim but it does no harm to give fans something else to look at and to go and test yourselves in Europe, use it the right way to hopefully enhance your season."
